  • Egyptian Folkloric Overview
    This workshop covers Ghawazee, Saiidi, and the Baladi sections of Classical/Modern Egyptian Raqs Sharqi. A discussion and some information on the created folkloric dances such as the Reda style Melaya Luf and Fellahi dances may be included.

  • Hagallah Basics
    The Hagallah is a dance of celebration from North Africa usually seen in Egypt and the Western Desert area of Libya. In the traditional versions of the dance, a single female dancer performs, but in some modern variations, there are multiple dancers. Learn the basics of the Hagallah dance style, focusing on the hip work, shimmies, clapping, and differences in the staged Reda and Qawmeyya style performances.

  • Nubian Basics
    Workshop covering the basics of Nubian dance as it relates to belly dance. We will cover basic dance movements, music, and costuming for this dance style. Please bring a veil and hair clip with you to practice movements that use the flowing fabric as emphasis.

  • Tunisian Basics
    Workshop covering the basic movements, costuming, music, and balancing styles common in Tunisian dance. Please bring an unbreakable bowl, basket, pot, or tray to use for the balancing portion of the class.

  • Ghawazee Basics 1 – Beginning Level Techniques for Ghawazee Styles
    Ghawazee 1 covers common movements, music, shimmy types, and basic information about Ghawazee dance and performance. Please bring finger cymbals.

  • Ghawazee Basics 2 – Intermediate Level Techniques for Ghawazee Styles
    Ghawazee level 2 focuses on partnering, combinations, group formations, and props. Please bring finger cymbals and a cane.

  • Ghawazee Basics 3 – Pepper Alexandria’s Banat Mazin Ghawazee Style
    This workshop focuses on Banat Mazin style Ghawazee dancing based on extensive research by Pepper Alexandria of the Near Eastern Dance Company. Mahsati is the first dancer on the East coast to be certified in this style by Pepper Alexandria.   • Customized Workshop – Ethnic Overview and Individual Ethnic Style Workshops
    This customizable workshop covers common movements and stylizations for different folkloric and ethnic dance styles from the Middle East and North Africa. For the Ethnic Overview, the sponsor chooses up to 1 style per hour of workshop time. Separate full-length workshops on the following ethnic/folkloric topics are also available upon request.
